SUBJECT: “YOU CAN’T POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP: GIVING YOURSELF PERMISSION TO PAUSE “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
“You answer the calls, meet the needs, and make sure everyone else is okay, but when was the last time you paused long enough to ask yourself, ‘How am I really doing?’”
You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup: Giving Yourself Permission to Pause, Reflect, and Renew is permissible.
Just in case you misread the opening statement I am asking it again. When was the last time you paused long enough to ask yourself, “How am I really doing?”
Not the quick “I’m fine” you offer before moving to the next responsibility. Not the smile you put on because someone is depending on you. What is the honest answer? The one beneath the busy schedule, the strong exterior, and the determination to keep going.
During Emotional Wellness Month, let’s make room for that answer.
You Deserve Care, too. When you spend your days caring for family, serving your community, or encouraging others, it can be easy to leave yourself off the list. There is always another need, another request, or another task that seems more important than taking a moment for yourself. But your needs are not less worthy because you are accustomed to meeting everyone else’s.
Listen carefully: you are allowed to be grateful and still feel overwhelmed. You can love your family and need quiet time. You can find purpose in serving and still need a break. These feelings do not cancel one another out, and they do not make you any less caring or committed. Being the strong one should not mean being the one who never receives support. Give Yourself Permission to Pause, Reflect, and Renew.
Sometimes, the word we need most is PERMISSION.
Permission to say, “I don’t have the capacity for that today.” PERMISSION to let a call go unanswered until you have the energy to respond. PERMISSION to acknowledge disappointment instead of rushing past it.
A pause does not have to be elaborate. It might be a few quiet moments before the day begins, a walk without your phone, an honest conversation with someone you trust, or time spent doing something simply because it brings you joy.
Offer yourself the Kindness You give to others.
Think about how you would respond to a loved one who told you they were exhausted. Would you call them selfish for needing rest? Would you tell them to ignore their feelings and keep giving until nothing remained?
Or would you encourage them to slow down, accept help, and remember that they are loved beyond what they accomplish?
You deserve that same tenderness.
As this month concludes, make room for a more honest conversation with yourself. What feels heavy? What can wait? What could you share with someone rather than carry alone?
Remember:
You do not have to solve everything today. You do not have to pretend everything is easy. And you do not have to earn care by first reaching the point of exhaustion. You are more than what you do for others. Your feelings deserve a Pause, your needs deserve Reflective attention, and you deserve the Renewal you so freely advise others to do.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly FATHER ,
“Teach us the wisdom of the holy pause. Forgive us for running on empty, trying to serve others out of our own strength rather than resting in Yours. Remind us that taking time to pause, reflect, and renew is not weakness—it is worship. Fill our cups to overflowing with Your peace, grace, and presence, so that when we pour into the lives of others, we are giving from the abundant fullness of Your Love. “ - In Jesus Holy name Amen.
